What to Wear for Your Dallas Senior Portraits
Tips on What to Wear for Your Dallas Senior Pictures- Dallas Senior Photographer
As a Dallas senior photographer I can tell you, your senior portraits will become some of your most cherished pictures for decades to come. They mark an important milestone in your life and are often the only portraits your family will have that focus solely on you as an adult. If you think about it, all of the other important milestone portraits include significant others or you family, so this really is your time to have the spotlight shine on just you and your own interests. They should encompass who you are by reminding you of your interests and hobbies in high school as well as the path ahead in college or your career. This includes carefully planning your outfits, the accessories or props you bring with you, and making sure you pick a location that highlights your own personality and taste.
Have Two to Four Outfits- Classic is Best
I have packages that range from two to four outfits. I feel like every senior should have a minimum of two outfits and beyond four outfits taking and choosing your senior portraits becomes overwhelming and redundant. I always recommend picking at least one timeless outfit that will stand the test of time for your senior portraits.
For gentlemen a classic suit and for the ladies a more formal or semi formal solid colored dress. I also recommend choosing something that could be a bit more trendy and commemorate what was popular for your time during high school-outfits like crop tops, high waisted jeans, distressed denim, and flowy maxi dresses.
Chose Solid Colors or Small Prints- Jewel Tones or Neutrals
I always tell my Dallas senior portrait clients to make sure they choose solid colors or small prints. Large bold patterns are distracting and take away from the subject. They also do not tend to compliment the scenery and can be busy and distracting. My favorite colors are jewel tones or neutrals. I prefer reds, navy, deep purple, emerald green, plum, cranberry, or soft creams or golds. Textures such as lace or tulle tend to photograph beautifully also.
Add Accessories
I love when clients accessorize. It adds an element of interest to the portraits and compliments the outfits. I love hats, cowgirl/cowboy boots, sassy stylish heels, jewelry, and jackets. They add a fun pop and can help add interest to the poses.
Bring Props that Hold Meaning and Represent Your Hobbies
For props, I think it’s important to bring along anything that’s had meaning during your high school career. I’ve had some of my Dallas senior photography clients bring along musical instruments they’ve played, their football/baseball jerseys/gloves/balls, cheer or dance uniforms, pointe shoes/leotards/tutus, books they enjoyed reading, letter jackets, horses, or even their high school cars! It’s also not uncommon to bring along a college t shirt as one of your outfit choices if you have already selected your school.
Match Your Wardrobe to the Location and Background
It’s important to make sure your wardrobe selection for your senior portraits also fits the location you choose. As a Dallas senior photographer I have many locations to choose from in both Dallas and Fort Worth for your senior pictures. From Davis Park and Highland Park Village, to the Fort Worth Stockyards, Downtown Fort Worth Sundance Square, the Canals in Las Colinas, The Dallas Arboretum, The Kimbell Art Museum, and many other beautiful fields and nature settings.
Make Sure Your Clothing Fits and is Comfortable
Some general tips to keep in mind are that you must make sure everything is carefully ironed or steamed, make sure no undergarments are visible, make sure the clothing pieces fit you properly and are flattering, and avoid anything that highlights areas of your body that you are not comfortable with. It’s important you feel comfortable, relaxed, and confident in the pieces you choose for your session!
Professional Hair and Makeup Recommended
I also highly recommend professional hair and makeup for my senior girls and I have a couple of highly talented makeup artists I refer clients to. Having your hair and makeup professionally done will ensure that it holds up well throughout the session and that you have on the right amount of makeup to photograph well. It’s also important that your nails are manicured and free of any chips in polish. For my senior guys make sure your you use a light hair spray if your hair is longer and that your nails are trimmed and short.
I would love to capture your senior portraits and help you plan the perfect outfits and location!
